Never share your mobile banking PIN or SMS one-time password (OTP) with anyone. SLBA member banks will never ask for your password via telephone or social media.
1. The Golden Rule of Banking Authentication
No commercial bank employee, customer care agent, or field technician is authorized to ask for your mobile banking PIN, electronic card CVV, or SMS verification code. If someone contacts you claiming an account freeze requires your PIN, immediately terminate the call and notify your nearest branch.
2. Securing Mobile Banking Apps & SIM Registrations
Ensure that your mobile SIM card is registered in your legal name matching your National Identity Card. If you experience an unexpected loss of network signal ("SIM Swap"), notify your telecom provider and bank immediately to preempt unauthorized digital wallet takeovers.
3. Recognizing Phishing & Social Engineering Schemes
Be vigilant against SMS alerts promising unverified lottery winnings, unsolicited overseas investments, or urgent fee penalties. Authentic bank correspondence will only arrive via verified institutional SMS short-codes and official domain emails ending in accredited bank domains.
Official 4-Step Consumer Dispute Resolution Protocol
If your financial transaction, fee deduction, or mobile banking request has not been satisfactorily addressed by your bank:
- Step 1: Direct Branch Inquiry — Lodge an official written inquiry with your commercial bank's branch manager and retain your ticket reference number.
- Step 2: Internal Bank Ombudsman — If unresolved within 5 business days, escalate to the accredited bank's Chief Compliance Officer or Customer Care Desk.
- Step 3: SLBA Consumer Secretariat — Submit a formal mediation petition via the SLBA Consumer Dispute portal (somalilandbanking.org/contact) with relevant transaction receipts.
- Step 4: Central Bank Regulatory Oversight — Final statutory arbitration through the Central Bank of Somaliland Supervision & Financial Integrity Division.
