MEMBERSHIP & ELIGIBILITY

Any Bank licensed by the Bank of Somaliland pursuant to dispensation of the Law is eligible for membership of the association. The Bank of Somaliland will not be eligible for membership but a representative may be invited to any meeting should it be felt that their presence would be of benefit.

Our Current Members

The Somaliland Banking Association was established and acts as a forum for the banking sector, with 4 current members. SLBA is here to  create a reputable and professional banking sector to best support Somalis, who entrust their ambitions and hard-earned resources with its member banks.

Any financial institution that’s a member of SLBA is subject to the banking code of conduct and the rules governing the financial sector. A membership can be revoked by the organization if such an entity deems to convey its services contrary to the laid out regulations and guidelines. A member can also freely at his discretion request to withdraw from the organization by submitting a letter of dissolution/notice and exit to the organization stating the circumstances and or reasons.

Somaliland’s banking system must be strong and stable. Equally, it should ensure that the
households and businesses who use the banking system are well served. Somaliland’s banks are subject to multiple layers of governance, which are the systems and processes that banks use when pursuing their objectives and managing their risks. Becoming a member reflects the work of self-governance undertaken by the industry through the SLBA.

MEMBERSHIP

Eligibility for Membership

Any bank licensed by the Bank of Somaliland is eligible for Membership of the Association. The Bank of Somaliland will not be eligible for membership but a representative may be invited to any meeting should it be felt that their presence would be of benefit.

Admission To Memership

Any bank wanting to become a member shall apply in writing for admission to the Association. An applicant may be required by the Executive Council to supply such particulars and information as the Council may deem necessary. Provided that Banks who are members of the Somaliland Banking Association at the time of Adoption of the Constitution of the Somaliland Banking Association need not reapply. Every application that fits the requirements for membership shall be placed before the Executive Council at its meeting or circulated among the members of the Council for consideration.

An applicant being admitted as a member shall, pay the membership fee as soon as they join. Upon admission the fee is expected at the beginning of each year (Jan 1st).

Register of Members

The Association shall maintain a Register of Member banks and following particulars shall be entered in the register of members :
  1. Name and address of each member and the date of commencement of its membership ; and
  2. The names of not more than five (5) Authorized Representatives of each Member, who are entitled or empowered to act and vote on behalf of the Member or otherwise represent the Member for the purpose of this Constitution or for any other purpose of the Association.
  3. Every Member shall furnish the names of its Authorized Representatives for being entered in the Register within one month of its admission as a Member.

Privileges of Members

Subject to such conditions as may from time to time be prescribed by the Executive Council, every Member shall be eligible to obtain :
  1. The guidance and advice of the Association ; and
  2. All circulars and publications of the Association.
